Homework Time
How do you make the most of your child’s homework time and homework space? That question, along with topics on organization, time management, and study skills are often discussed by our President, Ann Dolin M.Ed. Ann visits local PTA groups on a monthly basis to present on a variety of topics and below you’ll find a few of her favorite tips on homework!
Homework time:
- More is accomplished when students begin homework right after school and do the hardest assignment first. Help prioritize assignments (what will be done first, second, third, etc?).
- After prioritizing, give your child a break, but usually not more than 30 minutes.
- Check to see if there are any long-term assignments. Put them on a monthly calendar and break into incremental due dates. Transfer onto daily ‘to do’ list if necessary.
- Put the first and least appealing assignment on the desk opened to the page assigned – this provides a visual.
Homework space:
- Choose a place that is away from distractions, clutter free, but close enough to monitor.
- Be sure that all supplies are easily accessible and in one place.
- Consider setting up a portable system using a shower caddy where all necessary materials (pens, pencils, rulers, paper, etc) are stored.
- Some students do well by doing homework while lying down, playing with a stress ball, or even walking around.
