What's up this summer at Educational Connections?!

As a former teacher, I know that students are quickly losing focus and turning their thoughts to the last day of school. As much as they might feel that summertime equates a break from learning, research shows that without reinforcement, summer can cause a great deal of learning loss. In order to combat this phenomenon, we have a few great programs to keep students sharp over the vacation.

1-1 In Home Tutoring
With over 100 tutors, most of whom are certified teachers, we are able to provide the most individualized instruction for students in grades K-12. Whether it's algebra review, coaching and study skills, or reading comprehension strateiges, we skillfully match tutors with students for the optimal learning experience.

To provide a more structured approach to summer learning, we also offer several packages that promote specific academic skills including active reading, writing, and organization.

Please visit our website for more information.

Summer Study Skills Class
Taught at our ofifce in Fairfax by Educational Connection's own expert staff, this class is sure to help students start the new school year positively and confidently. Each hour and fifteen minute session will focus on components of organization, time management, goal setting, and study skills. We'll also discuss coping strategies to help make transitions to a new grade or school more successful.

Other Blogs!

Here at Educational Connections, we love blogging. The opportunity to create, maintain, and respond to educational dialogues is priceless. Given this passion of ours, it's not a suprise that we love reading blogs too! Here are a couple that we frequent!

CHADD's (Children and Adults with AD/HD) Leadership Blog

In this blog, CHADD's CEO invites colleagues and professionals to discuss relevent issues surrounding the diagnosis, treatment, and research of AD/HD. While this seems like a narrow scope, topics actually vary tremendously, ranging from comorbid disorders (including addiction and bi-polar), personal experiences, and self esteem. It's definitely worth a look or two. You might find you check back much more often than that! You can also subscribe to their blog for easy access and up-to-date information.

Special Education Law Blog
http://specialedlaw.blogs.com
Navigating the world of special educationa can be overwhelming and daunting, even for those experienced with the system. Learn about new cases and laws that apply to all students, not only those who have special needs.

Last, but not least, is www.Eduwonk.com
Focusing on Education News, analysis, and commentary, Eduwonk is the place to get all of the latest academic happenings. If you browse their "issues" you can find information on education finance, equity, high school reform, and special education laws (just to name a few!).

We hope that you find these blogs as interesting as we do! You never can tell what you'll learn on the web these days!!

TUTOR OF THE MONTH TIME!

My favorite time of the month!!!!

April showers may have persisted into May, but Liz Latwin brings all the sunshine we need! As May's tutor of the month, Liz is recognized based on the recommendation of her students and families. Here is what one of her mothers had to say:

My 15 year old daughter is a strong student, very organized, and self motivated. She has however, had a history of below average scores on standardized tests.

After deciding she wanted to look at transferring to a competitive boarding school, we sought assistance from EC Tutoring who matched us with Liz Latwin for SSAT prep.

Our family cannot say enough wonderful things about this experience! Liz first made our daughter feel comfortable & confident; then over a short window of time, taught her excellent testing skills. She made the process enjoyable as well as educational and was so accommodating with our challenging schedule. Our daughter improved her scores dramatically and received acceptances from all three schools that she applied to. More importantly though, our daughter learned valuable strategies that she feels help her with her everyday academic studies and testing. She has already stated that she wants Liz to promise to be her SAT tutor!

Liz is truly a gifted tutor who deserves much more recognition than we can give. We're truly lucky to have her!!!
