SSAT - Secondary School Admission Test

EC and the SSAT

Since 2004, Educational Connections has been a member of the Secondary School Admission Test Board and an official test center for the SSAT.  We offer both national and independent test dates. Applying to independent schools can be an overwhelming process. By consulting with parents on school choices, score reports, and test preparation options, we hope to ease any concerns that students or parents may have.

A required entrance exam for many independent schools, the SSAT provides a common measure of student ability and a basis on which to compare students from diverse backgrounds.  Designed for students in grades 5-11, the SSAT has both a Lower and Upper Level version.  SSAT scores carry weight of varying degrees among independent school admissions offices.  There are many parts that make up a students application to private school, and the SSAT is just one piece.

Format of the SSAT

The test (both Lower and Upper) always begins with a 25 minute writing sample, two 30 minute quantitative sections, one 30 minute verbal section, and one 40 minute reading comprehension section. The 30 minute sections can appear in any order.  The test itself is 2 hours and 35 minutes, however, you should plan on approximately 3 hours for testing.

- 25 minute writing sample that is not scored, but added to a student's application
- 5 minute break
- 30 minute multiple choice section
- 40 minute multiple choice section
- 10 minute break
- 30 minute multiple choice section
- 30 minute multiple choice section

SSAT Content

The Verbal section consists of 30 synonym questions and 30 analogy questions.  The vocabulary found in this section is expected to be familiar to the average SSAT test taker, and is used to measure a student's verbal aptitude and ability to identify logical relationships between words and concepts.

The Quantitative section measures a student's understanding of mathematical concepts, computation, routine mathematical manipulations, problem solving, and the recall of factual knowledge.

The Reading Comprehension section assesses a student's ability to understand and assimilate what has been read (courtesy of the SSAT Interpretive Guide).
