Spark the brain, ignite the pen! All too often, students are not taught pre-writing strategies. They may learn how to outline or create thought webs, but those writing processes only prepare them for one kind of writing: standardized tests (or the run-of-the-mill, 5-paragraph essay). In this class, students will experiment with “quickwrites”—a fun, low-stakes way to get past writer’s block. Quickwrites spark more lengthy creative writing and make writing more enjoyable in every genre.

The Common App, accepted by more than 900 colleges and universities, is a streamlined application for college admissions. However, the process can be quite tedious and stressful for students, especially since the application will likely be reviewed by multiple schools on their list. The most important element? The essay. It allows applicants to be seen as individuals, not just a GPA or test score—but most students struggle to select unique topics that reflect their strengths and communicate their ideas in a compelling way.

That’s where this virtual class comes in. In it, rising seniors will work in small groups with a college essay coach to generate ideas, then write and revise their Common App essay. By tackling their essays together (and with a professional’s guidance), students will have the support and encouragement they need to write with confidence and lay the groundwork for a strong college application.
